Science involves abstract concepts difficult for many students to grasp. Learn how Dinah Zike’s Foldables®, Notebook Foldables, and other manipulatives can become invaluable instructional and learning tools.

Foldables can be used by students or teachers to clearly communicate data through graphs, tables, charts, models, and diagrams, including Venn diagrams. See multiple examples of 3-D interactive graphic organizers and effective manipulatives, and gain experience creating these tools for your classroom.

Participants can expect an integrative, hands-on thematic experience and leave ready to utilize these tools.

Inform curricular decision-making with your newfound knowledge of 3-D interactive organizers. This content area course has a K-5 focus on the 2024 Science TEKS.

WHAT DOES A DAY AT THE ACADEMY LOOK LIKE?

A Typical Day at DZA (Summer 2024 Science Sessions) The doors of the Academy typically open between 8:30 and 8:45 a.m. Enter the newly refreshed academy as you are greeted by the DZA crew. Marvel at the new exhibits all around and down the halls. Be sure to sign in so you get your TEA credit (sign-in clipboards are in the library next to the classroom or in the Commons area). Walk into the classroom and select a spot; notice that your supplies are ready and waiting for you! Get a quick familiarization tour of the Academy so you know where to find everything you need and get to know some of your learning colleagues for the day—DZA is a great place to forge new friendships and collaborative partnerships! Your presenter(s) will be chomping at the bit to start on the day’s instruction promptly at 9 a.m.; don’t worry, though, they’ve included brain breaks for you if you need to check in at home! We’ll start right off with grade-level and content-specific Foldables and manipulatives to get your minds and hands engaged. The morning will fly by and before you know it, it will be time for a guided tour of the DZA STEAM Gardens with Dinah Zike as your tour guide followed by lunch on your own—a good time to chat with new friends and explore the charming village of Comfort. Now that you are fed and refreshed, it’s back to the Academy for the afternoon (we start our afternoon sessions at 1:00 p.m. and we sign in both morning and afternoon). If you have questions from the morning, this is the time to share them as you learn more about capturing student learning and incorporating what you’ve done in the morning into your classroom life. Many folds and applications later, it will be time to wrap things up—we aim to let you go at 3:30, refreshed and brimming with ideas and the materials you need to bring what you did today to your classroom. So many ideas buzz in your brain as you head home. You’ve got your science time covered this year!
